What happened to Nextel push to talk?
Nextel push to talk left the iDEN network for Sprint Direct Connect, a service on Sprint's 3G CDMA network, before the 2013 shutdown.4 T-Mobile now sells Direct Connect: one-to-one calls, ad hoc groups of up to 10, talk groups of up to 250 and one-way broadcast calls to 500 people.3
What T-Mobile lists for Direct Connect today:
- Devices: rugged push-to-talk handsets, plus iOS and Android phones and tablets.3
- Admin: contacts, talk groups and settings are managed in the Corporate Administration Tool.3
- App modes: the T-Mobile Direct Connect app has a Radio mode, set by the administrator, with zones and up to 96 talk groups.5
- Coverage: T-Mobile adds satellite-backed push-to-talk coverage through T-Satellite where terrestrial networks are unavailable.3
- Mission-critical tier: a separate MCPTT service follows 3GPP standards, with up to 3,000 users per talk group.3
Pricing for Direct Connect goes through T-Mobile sales.3
Do old Nextel walkie-talkie phones still work?
No. A phone built for iDEN lost voice, push to talk and data when Sprint decommissioned the network on June 30, 2013, and there is no iDEN network to rejoin.1 Phones that carry push to talk today are ordinary Android and iOS devices and rugged handsets with a dedicated key, running a carrier service or an app. See push-to-talk phones for what the key does and which phones have one.
Verizon lists a Samsung Galaxy XCover7 Pro, a Sonim XP Pro 5G, a Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ and a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 for its service.6
What replaced Nextel Direct Connect?
The three national carriers each sell push to talk. AT&T Enhanced PTT starts at $5.00 per user per month (Standard) and $20.00 (Advanced), plus taxes and fees, as of October 2026.7 T-Mobile Direct Connect and Verizon Push to Talk Plus are priced through sales.36 The carrier push-to-talk page covers all three in detail.
- AT&T Enhanced PTT. Group and one-to-one calls on smartphones, rugged and specialty devices. On select devices it runs as "EPTT only" service, with no cellular calls and no data browsing. Advanced adds land mobile radio interoperability.7
- Verizon Push to Talk Plus. An app for calls to one contact or a group: up to 250 people in a conversation, broadcasts to 500, and up to 3,000 users with the Group Advanced add-on. Verizon says existing land mobile radios can join the same channels, and runs it on its 5G network.6
- T-Mobile Direct Connect. The service described above, with land mobile radio interoperability and a mission-critical option.3
Can a PoC radio replace a Nextel phone?
Yes, for push to talk. A PoC (push-to-talk over cellular) radio sends voice over an LTE network, so it works as far as that network does, as the Nextel phone did, but it is a radio with a PTT key and no calling plan. The basics are in what is a PoC radio and 4G LTE walkie-talkies.
US sellers bundle the radio with service:
- Rapid Radios sells a G1 2-pack for $399 with the first year of nationwide multi-carrier service included, then $50 per radio per year ($40 with auto-pay), as of October 2026.89 The Rapid Radios alternatives page covers it and its competitors.
- PeakPTT sells radios from $129 and service at $24.95 per radio per month on AT&T and T-Mobile networks, month-to-month, to business and government customers only.1011
A radio must carry the LTE bands of the network that serves you. PeakPTT's PTT-284G, for example, lists FDD-LTE B2, B4, B5, B12, B13, B14, B66 and B71 and AT&T network certification.12 The LTE band checker shows how a band list is matched with operator bands; its operator data covers 22 European countries.
Which push-to-talk app replaces Nextel?
An app on a phone replaces the handset without new hardware. Zello Work costs $8.00 (Core) or $15.00 (Plus) per user per month on monthly billing, $6.80 and $12.75 billed yearly (October 2026), with a 14-day trial and month-to-month terms.13 It runs on Android 7 or later and iOS 16.1 or later.14
- Radios: Zello Work connects to radio gateways through Zello Bridge, for channel calls only, with up to 16 links.15
- Data: with the bitrate on Auto, Zello says an average user takes 70 to 100 MB a month; the PoC data calculator estimates it for your talk time.16
- Rugged phones and radios: Zello lists tested rugged phones such as the Sonim XP Pro and Kyocera DuraXE, and sells no hardware itself.17
