What are Rapid Radios, and how do they work?
Rapid Radios is a US seller of handheld PoC (push-to-talk over cellular) radios. Each radio carries an IoT SIM that picks the strongest LTE network among Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, and the price includes the first year of service. The radio works only where an LTE tower is in range.12
Facts from Rapid Radios' own pages:
- Models: the G1 handheld (8,800 mAh battery, 165 g) and a G1 base or car unit; the RAD1 adds IPX6 sealing, a floating body and a Wi-Fi backup for use when no tower is available.13
- Calls: one-to-one and group calls, in groups of up to 200 users.13
- Setup: no programming or FCC license needed, the company says; radios ship with a SIM installed.1
- Management: RapidOPS, a web portal, handles radios, groups and live location. An optional Android and iOS app can be used instead of the radio, on Wi-Fi or LTE.4
- Encryption: the FAQ states end-to-end 256-bit AES.2
The mechanics of PoC are in what is a PoC radio and 4G LTE walkie-talkies.
