Why do people look for a Zello alternative?

People look for a Zello alternative when the free app no longer fits a business, when per-user pricing grows with the team, or when they need a server, region or radio link that Zello's plans do not include. Each reason below comes from Zello's own pricing, terms and help pages.12

  • Free app limits. The free Zello app is non-commercial. Zello's terms bar commercial use except under a paid subscription, and Zello says using the free app for business breaks them.32
  • Price per user. Core is $8.00 and Plus $15.00 per user per month billed monthly, or $6.80 and $12.75 billed yearly (October 2026). Zello offers no license for unlimited users.14
  • Hosting. The cloud service runs in the United States, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia, with regional servers for lower latency.52
  • Own server. Zello Enterprise Server is part of the Enterprise plan, priced on quote. It runs on a local network without internet but has no transcription, translation or single sign-on, and the customer runs the hardware.67
  • Dispatcher. Dispatch Hub is a desktop app for Windows 10 or later and macOS 12 or later, included in every plan.8
  • Radio links. Zello Bridge connects channels to third-party radio gateways: channels only, up to 16 links.9

The Zello platform page covers plans, devices and limits in detail.

Which alternative can run on my own server?

Eight services offer self-hosting: Zello Enterprise Server, TASSTA, WalkieFleet, RealPTT, WAVE PTX On Prem, ESChat, Privox and Voxer Enterprise. Instavox installs a dedicated server on its Premium plan. Capacity, price and the features you keep differ from one to the next, as the list below shows.62330223541171113

  • Zello: Enterprise plan on quote; works when the internet is not available.67
  • WAVE PTX On Prem: 200 to 100,000+ users inside the customer's network.35
  • ESChat: customer-hosted on-premise, managed remotely by ESChat; $3,085 per year for a 25-user bundle on the US price list.4115
  • TASSTA: on-premise or cloud, with the same capabilities.23
  • WalkieFleet: the server runs on Windows or Linux, on your machine or a partner's.30
  • RealPTT: you supply the server and IP address; an agent buys the license.22

Which alternative connects to DMR, P25 or analog radios?

Several do, through gateways. Zello Bridge works with third-party radio gateways, TASSTA T.Bridge reaches TETRA, DMR, P25 and analog, WalkieFleet has an AIS gateway for DMR, WAVE PTX links to ASTRO 25, P25, DIMETRA and MOTOTRBO, and AT&T Advanced and Verizon list LMR interoperability.92732353839

  • Zello: gateways from JPS and Raven connect through Zello Bridge; they are third-party products and need testing in your own setup.439
  • ESChat: an RoIP or SDK gateway connection costs $125 per year; the ISSI or AIS base package is $1,800 per year plus a one-time $3,500 setup (US prices).15
  • Instavox: DMR interconnect on PREMIUM.13

For the radio-side trade-offs see LMR vs PoC.

Where can the data be hosted?

Zello's cloud is in the United States, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia. Teams stores Walkie Talkie data for EU Data Boundary and UK tenants in EU data centers. ESChat for Business runs from AWS regions including Ireland, France, Germany and Great Britain. WalkieFleet depends on the partner; self-hosting settles the question wherever it is offered.5104130

  • Example partner: PoC Me runs its main WalkieFleet server on a dedicated machine in an IONOS data center in Europe, with a secondary server of its own.44
  • Teams: other tenants are stored in the United States, and the tenant has no choice of region.10

Which radios and phones work with each alternative?

Phone apps run on ordinary Android and iOS phones, while radios depend on each platform's device list. Zello publishes setup guides for the Inrico T199, TYT W700, Telo TE390 and M5, Talkpod N50 and Siyata SD7, and TASSTA lists about 175 devices. The app compatibility tool shows which radios name each app.2024

Try the app compatibility tool for Zello, then pick another app in the same tool to compare. The PoC radio vs phone app comparison covers keys, speakers, sealing and cost per user. TASSTA says its compatibility covers core functions only: the PTT button, the emergency button and on some models the volume knob.24

Questions

Is Zello free?

The Zello app is free for non-commercial use. Business use needs Zello Work from $6.80 per user per month billed yearly (October 2026), with a 14-day trial, and qualifying first-responder teams use it free.12

Is there a Zello alternative that works without internet?

Zello Enterprise Server runs on a local network when the internet is not available. WalkieFleet and TASSTA can also be installed on your own servers. Teams Walkie Talkie does not work without connectivity. For links with no network at all, see walkie-talkie alternatives.7302310

What replaces Nextel push to talk?

The Nextel alternatives page covers it. The US carrier services in the table above are AT&T Enhanced PTT and Verizon Push to Talk Plus.3839

How does Zello compare with a traditional two-way radio?

Zello sends voice as data over the internet, so range is network coverage, while a traditional radio talks directly on its own frequency. PoC radio vs phone app and two-way radio vs walkie-talkie compare the devices.42
